It will attack your ship as soon as it sees you. It is not particularly fast, but its attacks can severely damage your ship. So keep your distance!
A successful hunt gives you the "Sperm Whale Killer" Achievement with an extremely helpful 30% "Taming Affinity Boost".
The sperm whale also has a bit of gold with it.
